Safety and First Aid for Groomers

Accidents happen. Being prepared is what makes you a professional.

Common injuries:

• Clipper burn — Use blade coolant, check temperature frequently
• Nicks and cuts — Apply styptic powder, pressure. If bleeding continues past 5 minutes, call the vet
• Quicking a nail — Styptic powder. Always inform the owner

Emergencies:

• Dog bites you — Stay calm, do not yank away. Clean wound immediately.
• Dog falls off table — Should NEVER happen. Always use a grooming loop.
• Allergic reaction — Know the signs. Have Benadryl dosing chart posted.

First aid kit: Styptic powder, gauze, vet wrap, antiseptic spray, eye wash, Benadryl, emergency vet numbers.
