Skills You Need (And How to Get Them)
Great groomers are not born — they are built. Here is what you need to develop:
Technical Skills:
- Bathing and drying — Sounds simple, but proper technique prevents skin issues and cuts drying time in half
- Brushing and dematting — Different coats need different tools and approaches
- Clipper work — Blade lengths, snap-on combs, going with the grain
- Scissoring — The hardest skill to master, but what separates good groomers from great ones
- Nail trimming — Including dark nails where you cannot see the quick
Business Skills:
- Client communication — setting expectations, handling complaints
- Time management — you will need to groom 4-6 dogs per day to make real money
- Basic bookkeeping — tracking income, expenses, and taxes
How to learn: Start with YouTube (there is incredible free content), invest in a grooming course, and practice on friends and family dogs. Many groomers start as bathers at established salons to learn the basics before going solo.
