Licensing, Permits and Insurance
This is not the exciting part, but it is what separates a real business from a side hustle that could get shut down.
Business License: Most cities and counties require a general business license. Check with your city clerk's office. Usually $50-$150 per year.
Home Occupation Permit: Since you are running a business from home, many jurisdictions require a specific home occupation permit. This is where zoning matters.
Insurance — Non-Negotiable:
- General liability — Covers you if a dog is injured in your care or a client slips in your driveway. About $300-$500 per year.
- Professional liability — Specifically covers injury to animals in your care.
- Property coverage — For your equipment. Your homeowner's policy likely will not cover business equipment.
Get insured before you groom your first paying client.
