Space Requirements and Zoning Rules

You do not need a huge space — many successful home groomers work in a converted garage, spare bathroom, or even a dedicated room.

Minimum space: About 8x10 feet for the grooming area itself. You need room for a tub, a grooming table, a drying area, and storage. A separate entrance for clients is ideal but not required.

Zoning: Check your local zoning laws before investing anything. Some residential areas prohibit home businesses with client traffic. Look for:

  • Home occupation permits in your municipality
  • HOA restrictions if you are in a planned community
  • Noise ordinances — dryers and dogs can be loud
  • Parking requirements for client vehicles

Pro tip: If zoning is restrictive, consider a mobile setup that parks in your driveway. Many municipalities treat this differently than a home-based business.
